AT&T Inc. is one of the largest telecommunications and media companies in the world. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, AT&T provides mobile and fixed telephone services, broadband internet, pay television, and business communications solutions to millions of customers across the United States and internationally. The company traces its origins back to the Bell Telephone Company founded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1877, and over more than a century, it has evolved into a global leader in connectivity and digital services.

AT&T operates through several core business segments: Communications, Latin America, and Corporate & Other. The Communications segment is the largest, delivering wireless services, fiber broadband, and voice solutions to consumers, as well as enterprise networking and cybersecurity solutions to businesses and government clients.


AT&T’s heritage is deeply connected to the history of telecommunications. The company began as a pioneer in telephone services, eventually becoming the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. For most of the 20th century, it operated as a regulated monopoly controlling much of the U.S. telephone network. In 1984, the company was broken up into multiple regional operating companies due to antitrust regulations, but AT&T retained its long-distance service and technology research operations.

Over the decades, AT&T expanded and diversified through mergers and acquisitions. It entered the wireless market aggressively in the 1990s and 2000s, eventually becoming one of the top three wireless carriers in the United States. The company acquired major assets in television and media, including the purchase of DirecTV in 2015 and the acquisition of Time Warner in 2018, which brought Warner Bros., HBO, and Turner networks into its portfolio. In recent years, AT&T has refocused on its core telecommunications operations, spinning off its media holdings while continuing to invest heavily in 5G wireless networks and fiber-optic broadband infrastructure
